Is Questrade a good broker? Our verdict
Questrade suits Canadian self-directed investors buying listed stocks and ETFs, but it is a less natural fit for traders seeking leveraged forex exposure: its clearest pricing and platform details concern securities, while forex appears as CFDs. Its appeal is a mix of commission-free online stock and ETF trades, a range of registered and non-registered account types, and a free active-trading platform. The trade-off is that some enhanced features and market data sit behind Questrade Plus, a paid subscription, while margin borrowing introduces interest costs and investment risk. Questrade says accounts have no minimum balance, so the initial barrier to opening one is low. The decision that most changes the experience is whether the standard tools meet your needs or the Plus subscription is worth paying for; that depends on whether you will use its added data, cashback, or other features.
What stands out
- Questrade says accounts have no minimum balance, making it possible to open an account without meeting a stated funding threshold.
- Online trades in U.S.- and Canadian-listed stocks and ETFs carry $0 commissions through Questrade, Inc.'s website or mobile apps.
- Questrade Pro is a free active-trading platform with advanced charts, hot keys and Options Radar.
What to consider
- Questrade Plus costs CAD $19.99 per month plus tax, so its added market data and other features can create a recurring cost.
- In-kind and partial security transfers into Questwealth accounts are liquidated, which can affect investment exposure and may create tax consequences in cash accounts.
Who owns Questrade and where is it based?
Review score3.8/ 5Questrade is a Canadian investment and trading group serving self-directed investors and managed-portfolio clients. Questrade Financial Group Inc. wholly owns Questrade, Inc. and Questrade Wealth Management Inc. (QWM), and the group lists its head office in Toronto. It describes its purpose as helping Canadians invest and trade across a range of account types, rather than as a specialist forex broker.
Questrade earns revenue through charges on selected transactions and services, subscriptions, and interest on margin borrowing. Its headline $0 stock and ETF commission applies to specified online trades, while other transactions and optional data or subscription services have separate pricing. That structure favours investors who trade eligible listed shares and ETFs online, but investors using other products need to account for their applicable charges.
QWM provides Questwealth Portfolios, a managed portfolio service, while Questrade, Inc. supplies administrative, execution, custody and reporting services for those accounts. Questrade also offers self-directed accounts including RRSPs, TFSAs and cash accounts.
Is Questrade safe, legit and regulated?
Review score4.0/ 5Questrade, Inc. is a Canadian registered investment dealer and a member of the Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization (CIRO) and the Canadian Investor Protection Fund (CIPF). The important qualification is that CIPF benefits apply only to activities undertaken by Questrade, Inc., rather than automatically covering every service in the corporate group.
The distinction matters for managed portfolios. QWM is a registered Portfolio Manager, Investment Fund Manager and Exempt Market Dealer, and it manages Questwealth Portfolios by providing trade instructions to Questrade, Inc. QWM is not a CIRO or CIPF member. Questrade, Inc. handles administrative, trade execution, custodial and reporting services for QWM accounts. The two companies therefore have different stated roles and memberships; a client's service determines which company's terms are relevant.
These registrations and memberships provide a defined Canadian regulatory framework for the activities within their scope. They do not remove market, counterparty or trading risk, and the stated CIPF membership should not be extended to QWM's activities beyond the stated Questrade, Inc. scope.
Questrade fees, spreads and commissions
Review score4.2/ 5Questrade's pricing is lowest for eligible online stock and ETF trades, while options, bonds, mutual funds, margin borrowing and optional data have distinct charges. Its $0 commission applies to online trades in stocks and ETFs listed on U.S. or Canadian exchanges through Questrade, Inc.'s website or mobile apps. Exchange and ECN fees may also apply, so the commission figure is not necessarily the full transaction cost.
For options, $0 applies to contract fees for U.S.-listed equity options traded online. U.S. index options cost US$0.99 per contract, and Canadian-listed equity and index options cost CA$0.99 per contract. Other fees may apply. Questrade Plus subscribers can receive CAD $0.05 cashback per qualifying U.S. equity options contract, subject to conditions and exclusions. That cashback is a subscription benefit, not a reduction in the stated contract fee for every option trade.
Other transaction prices include $24.95 per bond trade and $9.95 per mutual-fund trade. GICs have no stated buy or sell cost. Online journaling costs $9.95 per request, or is free and unlimited with Questrade Plus. The standard account has no annual account fee and no inactivity fee.
### What does Questrade Plus add to the cost? Questrade Plus costs CAD $19.99 per month plus tax. It includes the standard features alongside options cashback, an RRSP contribution match on qualifying deposits up to the CRA annual limit, expanded market data including OPRA, and unlimited free online journaling. The value depends on use: a trader who needs OPRA or journals frequently may use the included features, while a client who mainly buys eligible stocks and ETFs may have little reason to pay for the subscription.
Questrade lists Expanded data at CAD $9.95 per month, with access included in Plus; Advanced data, including Level 2 depth on U.S. and Canadian markets and S&P indices, costs USD $44.95 per month. Real-time bid, ask and last prices for stocks and ETFs and options snap quotes are free. Questrade also advertises a USD margin rate as low as U.S. Prime minus 2.5% for clients trading at least 1,001 U.S. options contracts per calendar month across their Questrade accounts. The discount applies to USD margin balances in margin accounts, with the qualifying rate applied to the following month's interest. That threshold is relevant to frequent options traders, not a general margin rate for all clients.
Questrade account types and minimum deposit
Review score4.4/ 5Questrade says accounts are free to open and require no minimum balance. It offers self-directed RRSP, TFSA, FHSA, RESP, cash and margin accounts, with a separate managed-portfolio service through Questwealth Portfolios.
The account choice is driven mainly by tax treatment and how you intend to invest. Registered accounts include the RRSP, TFSA, FHSA and RESP; the cash account has no contribution limit or withdrawal restrictions. A margin account allows borrowing against investments to increase buying power, while Questwealth is a managed service rather than a self-directed account. Questrade says clients can hold CAD and USD in dual-currency accounts, including registered accounts, which lets them hold U.S. dollars for U.S.-listed stock and ETF trades.
Questrade Pro is a free active-trading platform. Questrade Plus is optional and costs CAD $19.99 per month plus tax; it adds benefits such as expanded market data and unlimited free journaling. For pre-IPO investments, Questrade requires verified accredited-investor status under applicable Canadian securities legislation and limits access to self-directed individual non-registered accounts. This eligibility is separate from the general account-opening terms.
Leverage, margin and order execution
Review score3.2/ 5Questrade provides margin borrowing for eligible investment accounts, with the amount available depending on the account and securities held. It advertises up to three times more buying power when a client links a Questrade TFSA to a margin account; that is a borrowing feature, not a uniform leverage allowance across every position or product.
Borrowing against investments creates an interest obligation, and Questrade warns that repayment remains the client's responsibility even if purchased securities lose value. The lowest advertised USD margin rate is tied to a high monthly U.S. options-trading threshold and applies to USD margin balances in margin accounts. For traders considering margin, the borrowing cost and account-specific buying power are central to the decision.
Questrade also lists Forex CFDs among its products, but its stated margin terms here concern investment-account borrowing and should not be treated as a forex-CFD leverage schedule.
What can you trade with Questrade?
Review score4.1/ 5Questrade's range includes U.S. and Canadian-listed stocks and ETFs, options, bonds, GICs and mutual funds, along with pre-IPO investments, private credit and Forex CFDs. The listed securities products give investors alternatives to a CFD-only account, while the forex offering is explicitly identified as CFDs rather than direct ownership of currency.
Stocks and ETFs are available through Questrade, Inc.'s online commission pricing for exchange-listed U.S. and Canadian products. Options include U.S.-listed equity options and U.S. index and Canadian-listed options, with different contract fees. Bonds and mutual funds also have per-trade charges, while GICs have no stated buy or sell cost. These distinctions matter because the costs and product structure vary by instrument.
Pre-IPO access is limited to verified accredited investors and self-directed individual non-registered accounts. Questrade also names private credit, but the product listing alone does not describe its terms or eligibility. The range is therefore more useful to securities investors seeking multiple product types than to a trader judging a forex-CFD catalogue by instrument counts.
Questrade trading platforms and app
Review score4.1/ 5Questrade Pro is Questrade's free active-trading platform, with customizable charts and tools for trading stocks, ETFs and options. Questrade highlights advanced charts, one-second candles, hot keys and Options Radar. The platform is positioned for active analysis and trade management; the listed features are platform capabilities, not evidence of trading performance.
Questrade describes its Flows automation as a way to set rules that can execute when specified conditions occur, including while the client is offline. The client creates and activates the rules and remains responsible for them; Questrade warns that errors in the logic, market events or data issues can produce unintended orders. Questrade also allows connections to third-party AI tools, but says the user reviews and approves responses, analysis, orders and custom indices before submission. Those outputs come from the connected tool, not Questrade advice.
Questrade's website and mobile apps support online stock and ETF trades. Questrade Plus adds features including expanded market data and OPRA access; its CAD $19.99 monthly subscription is separate from the free Pro platform.
Opening an account, deposits and withdrawal times
Questrade says all accounts are free to open and have no minimum balance. For an account transfer, clients can start the request through Funding > Transfer Account, and Questrade says it will handle the transfer process. It offers to reimburse transfer fees up to $150 per account; to claim the rebate, the client must submit a statement showing the fees within 60 days of the transfer request.
For Questwealth Portfolios, in-kind and partial transfers of securities are liquidated. When a transfer comes from a cash account, that liquidation may create capital gains or losses. This can change the assets held and affect the tax position, so a transfer into a managed portfolio is not necessarily a direct move of the same securities.
Questrade says cash accounts have withdrawals without restrictions and that dual-currency accounts can hold CAD and USD.

Research, education and customer support
Review score3.0/ 5Questrade provides personalized real-time news and insights tailored to a client's assets and accounts. That account-linked market context is its clearest stated research feature. Questrade also maintains Learning and Support resources, and Questrade Pro includes tools such as Options Radar and advanced options research.
These features serve different needs: news and insights relate to holdings, while the platform's options tools support active analysis.
Questrade alternatives worth comparing
A Canadian self-directed brokerage that includes expanded trading data and active-trading tools without a recurring subscription is the most relevant comparison to Questrade Plus. Compare its monthly platform and data charges with Questrade Plus at CAD $19.99 per month, including whether OPRA access or journaling is included.
Margin traders can also compare Questrade's volume-linked USD rate discount with providers that publish a margin rate without a high options-trading threshold. The relevant benchmark is the actual interest rate on the expected USD debit balance, not the lowest advertised rate alone.
Checks to make before you open an account
Choose between self-directed trading and Questwealth managed portfolios, since Questrade's group companies have different roles and memberships: Questrade, Inc. handles self-directed brokerage services, while QWM manages Questwealth Portfolios and is not a CIRO or CIPF member.
Decide whether the free Questrade Pro tools meet your needs or whether the added data and subscription benefits of Questrade Plus justify a recurring charge. If you plan to borrow against investments, evaluate the margin account's interest cost and your actual buying power rather than treating the advertised maximum as a fixed allowance. For a transfer into Questwealth, factor in the liquidation of transferred securities and possible tax consequences in cash accounts.

02Is Questrade safe?
Questrade, Inc. has CIRO membership and CIPF membership for activities undertaken by that company. QWM is not a CIPF member, so the stated protections do not apply universally across the group. Regulatory oversight does not remove market or counterparty risk.
03What is Questrade's minimum deposit?
Questrade says accounts are free to open and require no minimum balance, so it does not set a minimum account balance as a condition of opening.
04Does Questrade charge commission on stocks and ETFs?
Online trades in U.S.- and Canadian-listed stocks and ETFs through Questrade, Inc.'s website or mobile apps have $0 commission. Exchange and ECN fees may apply, so commission is not necessarily the only transaction charge.
05How much does Questrade Plus cost?
Questrade Plus costs CAD $19.99 per month plus tax. It includes features such as expanded market data, OPRA access, options cashback on qualifying contracts, an RRSP contribution match on qualifying deposits and unlimited free online journaling.
06What is Questrade's maximum leverage?
For securities margin, Questrade advertises up to three times more buying power when a client links a Questrade TFSA to a margin account. This is a margin-borrowing feature, not a universal leverage limit for every account or product.
